What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

To launch and co-ordinate, in cooperation with the POLIS network, the SAFE – Safety Actions For Europe – campaign.

The SAFE campaign aims to support local authorities in Europe to sign the European Road Safety Charter. For ACCESS this consists over three years of:

  • Co-ordinating the involvement of local authorities in the European Road Safety Action Programme and their adhesion to the European Road Safety Charter
  • Organising public signing ceremonies of the European Road Safety Charter, the first of which will be in London on April 7th, 2004, on world road safety day;
  • Supporting local authorities in designing local strategies for road safety by establishing an ACCESS Focal Point on road safety, chaired by the city of Leeds, where member cities can ask for information on road safety issues;
  • Introducing road safety presentations in ACCESS thematic seminars. The ACCESS thematic seminars in 2004 will take place in Reykjavik (17-18 May), with particular focus on smaller and medium-sized cities, Budapest (27-28 September), with particular focus on cities from new member states, and Vienna (10 November), where the ACCESS Annual General meeting will take place;
  • Identifying and gathering local authorities’ best practices to create a SAFE handbook and disseminate them via electronic and/or printing media;
  • Having a minimum of one page on the ACCESS website devoted to road safety and referring to the European Road Safety Charter and the European Road Safety programme.
