A recent assessment of the burden of disease from noise by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that traffic noise is a major cause of environmental health problems. In cities, and near main roads and railways, traffic is the major contributor to noise levels. At present, some 210 million Europeans are regularly exposed to road traffic noise levels exceeding 55 decibels and 35 million are exposed to these levels of rail noise, pursuant to recent studies. Health impacts frequently occur above this level, according to the WHO and the EU.

The goal of SUPREME was to collect, analyse, summarise and publish best practices in road safety in the Member States of the European Union, as well as in Switzerland and Norway. This document is a collection of best practices at national scale and aims to present the project’s results to national/regional policy and decision makers across Europe, thereby encouraging the adoption of successful road safety strategies and measures.

This 92 page paper highlights challenges and opportunities in road safety research in Europe, describing the contribution from the European Community’s Research Framework Programmes as well as from other research activities at European level and their impact on road transport safety sector. It encompasses relevant statistics and reports on who uses the roads and why, the social and economic impact of roads and road transport, and the current demand for improved infrastructure and sustainable development on the continent’s road networks.
