The Mayo Road Safety Working Group is an interagency group with the aim to reduce the numbers and severity of road traffic collisions in Mayo. The group’s main stakeholders are Mayo Council (including fire service), The National Road Authority, AN Garda Siochana, Health Service Executive (including ambulance service) & Road Safety Authority.

The Mayo Road Safety Working Group has produced the mayo Road Safety Plan, which aims to reduce death and injury on Mayo roads. The plan has been prepared to ensure a coordinated, collaborative and consistent approach to improving road safety for all road users. The Plan forms our commitment to the European Road Safety Charter as follows:

 

Conduct educational and awareness campaigns to discourage speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs and to reduce the high casualty rates attributed to young drivers.

 

Seek to develop the Road Safety Road Show concept (AXA insurance road safety show), to educate young adults in Mayo.

 

Develop and promote the road safety section of the Council´s website and regularly update information and interactive zone to encourage more hits.

 

We will feedback collision data to the National Road Authority and Mayo County Council to assist with road design to reduce the number of collisions.

 

Develop the road safety audit team by training new members and team leaders.

 

Motorcycle training program for motorcyclists.

 

Produce an annual report detailing actions achieved and distribute to all stakeholders.

 

Duration of commitment: 3 years.
