The Municipality of Copenhagen wishes to commit its road safety actions within the European Road Safety Charter

The new road safety plan of the Municipality aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries by 40% in 2012 as compared to the years 2003-2005.
This means a reduction from 322 to a maximum of 193 - of which no more than 7 fatalities will be tolerated.

Based on the evolvement of traffic accidents, the municipality has chosen to focus its road safety work on the following four areas until 2012:

  1. Accidents involving cyclists - the municipality has adopted a framework of action in 2007
  2. Accidents involving pedestrians - the municipality has adopted a framework of action in 2008
  3. Accidents in crossings - the most dangerous crossings are pointed out on an annual basis
  4. Accidents involving young risk drivers - a framework for an action plan is being developed

For each of these focus areas there has been set specific goals. Most remarkable is the goal aimed at cyclists. Here the ambition is to reduce by 50% the number of fatally and seriously injured cyclists from 130 to 65.

The Municipality of Copenhagen has experienced subsequent interventions on the basis of accident statistics to be effective in terms of road safety. The goals are.

  • Conversion of crossings, thereby improving safety for all road users
  • Conversion of road sections: hereby slowing down speed - particularly improves safety for the city's many crossing pedestrians
  • Operational projects: Small and effective improvements in signage and markings;
  • School way projects: enjoy considerable political attention and bring about benefits in terms of safety and security
  • Speed limits zones: a 40 km / h speed limit in residential areas
  • Campaigns: targeted behavioural effects on road users - particularly cyclists and pedestrians. These are carried out in together with the Municipality of Frederiksberg in the joint Traffic Council of the capital area (Byens Trafikråd)
  • Developing new methods and new forms of cooperation - Eg. cooperation with professional drivers

Copenhagen Municipality's vision for cyclists
“In Copenhagen, at least 50% of the inhabitants will go to their workplace or educational institution by bike”
"The number of seriously injured cyclists will drop by more than half compared to today”
"At least 80% of the Copenhagen cyclists will feel safe and secure in traffic”.

The increased focus on cyclists and school roads is leading to politicians continuously allocating more funds in this area. In recent years 250 million Danish Kroner have been allocated for cyclists and 50 millions for school roads.
