Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service

United Kingdom | Local/public authority

CFRS Road Safety Unit is pro-active in reducing Death and Injury on Cheshire's Roads by educating Young People and Adults through events, courses and engagement days. Its Prince Michael of Kent Award winning "Think Drive Survive" course is aimed at Young People aged 17+ and comprises hard-hitting presentations by CFRS, Police, Highways and NW Ambulance Service and a full length "Crashed Car Extrication" using Fire Fighters with state-of-the-art cutting equipment.

Compromiso

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service (CFRS) are committed to reducing the numbers of people who are killed and seriously injured across our County.

CFRS rescue twenty times as many people from Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) as it does from fires. The Service's vision is a Cheshire where there are no preventable deaths, injuries or damage from fires and other emergencies; clearly any persons being injured on our roads fall into this latter category. We will fully utilise the resources at our disposal to work collaboratively with partner agencies to have a positive impact in improving road safety. Our Safety Strategy will be to:

- Work in partnership to target those most at risk (population of Cheshire 1,000,000)

- Assist in providing data about accident black spots and contribute to finding engineering solutions to dangerous road conditions.

- Engage with the hard to reach and vulnerable people within our communities. (Young Road Users, Motorcyclists and Occupational Road Risk)

- Work towards educating all members of our community who are exposed to traffic risks, whether travelling in a vehicle or as a pedestrian.

- Work with enforcement agencies to target those who commit road traffic offences.

- Provide a competent and rapid intervention service in order to release persons trapped in vehicles involved in RTCs.

- Constantly evaluate our delivery against challenging targets to ensure the success of our strategy.

RESOURCING ROAD SAFETY ACTIVITY

The organisation, its people, its buildings, its reputation, its vehicles and equipment are the cumulative resources which are available and will be used to support our partners in delivering Road Safety. When committing resources to road safety activity we will strike the balance between our Road Safety activity and the other two pillars of our Community Safety Strategy, namely Fire and Community Wellbeing and Children and Young People will seek to ensure that the Service is being delivered in such a way that it provides value for money and delivers benefits commensurate to the investment of ourselves and our partners. The application of the diagnostic tool within the overarching Community Safety Strategy will be utilised in this regard.

We will also proactively work with and support Local Road Safety Partnerships in each Unitary Authority area where our intelligence and that of our partners inform us that there is a community need. The commissioning, design, delivery and evaluation will be agreed with each local partnership.
