The city of Vilnius will be hosting the European Road Safety Charter signing ceremony for Lithuanian organisations involved in road safety. The event, organised by the European Commission together with the Lithuanian Ministry for Transport and Communications, will take place on 10 June 2010.

Lithuania is one of the European Member States working with the European Commission to improve road safety and reduce accidents on European roads through the European Road Safety Charter.

Lithuania is of particular significance given the positive developments that have taken place there in only two years. Statistically, Lithuania had the highest road accident rates in 2007. Nevertheless, it had reduced the figure by half in 2009, thus demonstrating its strong commitment to road safety, despite the fact that the figures remain high, with 105 deaths per million inhabitants.

This optimism generated by Lithuania in the field of road safety will be supported and strengthened through the event, which will be attended by official representatives and organisations committing to continue their work in the field of road safety.

Mr Eligijus Masiulis, Minister for Road Safety, Ms Isabelle Kardacz, Head of the European Commission Road Safety Unit, and Mr Vilius Navickas, the Mayor of Vilnius, will be present at the signing ceremony and the European Road Safety Charter presentation. Through the programmed events, they will encourage the organisations attending to get involved in this European initiative.
From 2007 to 2009, 13 Lithuanian entities became part of the large Charter family. On 10 June 2010, 23 new entities will sign the European Road Safety Charter. Also, one Lithuanian entity will renew its existing Charter commitment for a further three years.

The event will take place on 10 June between 9.30 and 11 a.m. at the Vilnius City Council headquarters, Konstitucijos pr. 3, 2nd floor.

On 9 June 2010, at 6.30 p.m., in accordance with the wishes of the European Commission to hear from the public representatives, there will be an opportunity to exchange opinions and ideas with the European Road Safety Charter representatives. Citizen Forum will take place at the European Commission Representation headquarters in Lithuania, Naugarduko g. 10.
