At the culmination of its European Union Presidency, Slovenia continues to confront the challenge of improving safety on its roads. Throughout its Presidency, Slovenia has supported the goal set by the European Commission to lower the number of killed on Europe’s roads by 50% by 2010, thereby playing its part in/saving 25,000 lives.
The European Commission and The Slovenian Ministry of Transport call on all Member States, and all civil society movements to make their contribution to saving 25,000 human lives a year. The European Road Safety Charter marks a step in this direction by providing a framework for action.
On June 26th 2008, a European Road Safety Charter presentation and commitments signing event will take place at the Center Evropa in Ljubljana. This event aims to get closer to signatories and enforce the objectives and practices of the largest European road safety platform.
The Transport Minister, Radovan Žerjav, and approximately 80 representatives from Slovenian companies, associations and public authorities will participate in the signing event, each motivated by the common goal of reducing road fatalities. Mrs. Maria Teresa Sanz-Villegas, European Commission representative and coordinator of The European Road Safety Charter, will present the initiative and its objectives for the next three years.
In 2007, the city of Ljubljana signed the European Road Safety Charter. During the forthcoming 2008 event, the Deputy Mayor and the Ljubljana City Council will reveal the steps already taken to uphold the Charter’s aims and save lives on Slovenia’s roads. T-Media, a multimedia and Internet production company who also signed a commitment, will make a brief presentation of their existing road safety practices.
The event will be held at the Center Evropa in Ljubljana, Dalmatinova 4, on June 26th, 2008 at 15.00h and will be followed by light refreshments.
