Vehicles represent the highest risk workplace within Johnson & Johnson. The worldwide Johnson & Johnson SAFE Fleet program was designed to protect their number one asset, their people driving on company business. Their key indicators are metrics such as accidents per million miles rate (APMM), Injuries Per Million Miles rate (IPMM) and percent of vehicles in accidents.
As a continuation, they are renewing their commitment to the ERSCharter with the following:
1) Training directed towards employees
a - Behind the Wheel Training: they still provide behind the wheel training to all new employees in the company preferably within 90 days of hire and once every 3 years thereafter.
b - Corrective training: The company knows exactly what types of accidents and incidents are occurring as well as their costs through a consistent on line global reporting system and process. Such accurate data allows the company to intervene with corrective training actions. This training involves quarterly flash movies and presentations translated into the main global languages designed around the problematic accident areas that Johnson & Johnson is having worldwide.
c- Eco-driving: Johnson & Johnson is also investigating the creation of an online behaviour based eco-driving training program for their drivers worldwide as part of their commitment to CO2 emission reduction, but also as a way to further promote safe driving.
2) Road Safety Management Policy
A- Managers are required to address safe driving topics on their sales meeting agendas, they must review accidents after they happen, they must do yearly commentary drives and provide comments, coaching and conclusions. Safe drivers are rewarded in the company for accident free driving. Over the next few years Johnson & Johnson will be putting all of their managers with responsibilities for fleet drivers through a state of the art on line manager training program to improve their skills and knowledge around the global SAFE Fleet program. This will help establish further accountability at the middle management level for safe driving and will help to drive positive results with decreased accidents and injuries.
B- Within each region there are company or country teams led by a Chairperson or Champion who leads a SAFE Fleet team that meets on a regular basis to implement the WW J&J SAFE Fleet Assessment process called ATLAS. Each year, teams are required to do an on-line self-assessment of their performance which then rolls into a team action plan for the coming year. These plans are then signed off by the senior management of the respective companies. Formal on-line team assessments are then conducted in a consistent manner globally once every 3 years in each of the regions by the regional Fleet Safety Manager or Director. Teams are scored for their performance on these assessments and are given an award level as recognition (silver, gold or platinum). The global SAFE Fleet program is a top down driven approach with top management involvement right down to the driver level with global policy in place around fleet safety requirements.
3- Actions towards public
Johnson & Johnson will also begin to carry out elements of their fleet safety program to families and distributors. They have designed training and awareness tools to address teen driving and are beginning work on a SAFE driving handbook which they plan to distribute to families, distributors and perhaps even their customers.
