Road safety education department comprising local police officers who are road safety education monitors.

We undertake to carry out the training actions mentioned for a minimum of three years, although the plan is to continue them as part of the educational programme in this town. This road safety education department was created to educate schoolchildren in the town about road safety, and it will extend the programme to cover other areas, such as the elderly in retirement homes, workshop schools (comprising young people, the majority of whom have little education yet are of age), colleges, etc.

 

Schoolchildren:

-    At nursery and primary schools, we teach basic traffic rules, signs and road behaviour. In primary school, we also hold practical classes with the schoolchildren on portable circuits that we set up at the schools. We also go on outings around streets near the schools, and the schoolchildren spot those vehicles that fail to comply with the law.

-   At secondary schools, we go over the rules for drivers, passengers and pedestrians, and focus on the driving of motor vehicles by young people and adults, as well as traffic accidents resulting from negligent driving, alcohol and drug use, etc.

We use PowerPoint presentations that we have developed, to which we add photographs of real-life traffic situations.

-    We hold annual events for some 600 pupils, raising awareness exclusively about the issue of drinking and driving.

 

Professional drivers:

-     We provide information about the effects of medicine on driving and transport rules, focusing in particular on driving and rest times, active and passive vehicle safety, tyres, driving in adverse weather conditions, drinking and driving, what to do in the event of a traffic accident, and other topics of interest for driving professionals. We hold this activity at the industrial estate in our town, which has some 600 companies and gives work to approximately 6,000 people. We plan to put this activity into practice in another nearby town.

 

School for parents:

-     Events focusing on parents of all pupils at schools in the town. The events seek to give continuity to the classes taught to children at school and are aimed at mothers and fathers. The activity will take place in any of the schools in the town, and we plan to attract approximately 200 people over five years. At these events, we focus directly on the parents’ behaviour on the road as drivers or pedestrians when accompanied by their children, child restraint systems as essential elements for the safety of children in the event of accidents, and the effects of drinking and driving. We also analyse traffic accident rates involving young people and, if the participants are parents of secondary schoolchildren, we deal with other issues, focusing on the 12- to 16-year-old age group, dealing with young people as possible drivers of motor vehicles and autonomous pedestrians.
