What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?
  • Through our road safety action plan, we continue to commit to reduce the number of fatalities caused daily by traffic accidents in Alonissos. Therefore, we have devised the following measures in order to educate and improve road safety:
Many accidents are caused by a lack of road education among children, especially when crossing streets after school. Ten specially trained educators will ensure the safe crossing of 200 children every day from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for an indefinite period. We will also organise two-hour seminars every three months, to be given in the primary and secondary schools in Alonissos over the next three years. The seminars will focus on road safety, and we will use specially created material. This material will be leaflets educating the children on road safety issues such as crossing the road.
  • Following a two-month study, we have observed that an organised media campaign and the active presence of creative logos and links on our frequently visited website can also contribute to the prevention of accidents, especially during the summer period. Therefore, we have decided to create a department of graphic experts, who will design and distribute these spots and logos until 2013, with the cooperation and involvement of another three district municipalities.
  • As accidents caused by speeding and poor signage result in increasing numbers of deaths every year on Greek roads, we plan to rebuild 30 % of the streets in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians and paint signs on 80 % of road surfaces during the next three years.
