This slogan has a great deal to do with level crossings, and the main objective of our campaign (which has been under way for one year) is to reduce accidents and make the users of level crossings aware that their behaviour is decisive when it comes to avoiding accidents.
REFER also presented the Level Crossing Safety Green Paper, a document that will shortly be made available to the public. Through this document, we intend to share information, launch public discussion, gather contributions and opinions, and promote a social approach to this issue in order to achieve results. The objective is to promote an educational model to foster safe behaviour at level crossings. In Portugal in 2008, there were 55 accidents in which 17 people died at level crossings. REFER seeks to halve this figure by 2011. The campaign will be launched through the main media, including national radio and TV channels.
