We, the students of XB, guided by our teacher Adela Dimov, mobilized to organize a march on the 15th of April 2019 for raising the awareness in the eyes of the citizens regarding the worrying growth in the number of car accidents in our city and also for showing the authorities that we need that change.
We had made invitations for this march, which had been distributed to the Mayor, Vice Mayor, city’s officials, teachers and school’s leadership. The Mayor invited us into his office and asked about the purpose of the whole movement. He was extremely delighted to hear about our initiatives. We obtained the approval and support of the City Hall for the progress of this activity.
On 15th of April 2019, the Vice Mayor had accompanied us all over the march. We were protected by the Local Police, Traffic Police and the Constabulary. The activity had been promoted and publicized in the local newspaper Obiectiv- Vocea Brăilei; the hyperlink of the article is attached, as a confirmation of what we have just said.
In order to come better into notice to the citizens, we manufactured some banners which had messages such as Reduce the speed!, Drive carefully!, Life has priority!, Safer roads, Imply cordially! The flyers also had been distributed to both pedestrians and drivers met along our way, desiring to stimulate them into changing their mentalities and attitudes by transmitting our enthusiasm of a positive change. They were very pleased about our action and we had positive reactions from their side.
At the end of the march, the Vice Mayor congratulated us and assured us that he will do everything he can to implement our initiatives. Our initiatives appealed to him so much that he promised us to request our collaboration regarding the development of the new projects of the City Hall.
Although the march only involved a limited number of people (approximately 80 persons), it had a major impact over the whole community.
Pictures taken during the march could be seen in the attached Power Point project, newspaper article or the short film realized by our colleagues.
We have written a Manifesto, as well. When the march finished, the Mayor, Vice Mayor and the head of the Local Police station were handed the Manifesto which summarized our ideas and initiatives. The problems discovered regarding the Dorobanților Boulevard were described and we suggested improvements to the traffic course.
Concretely, in the Manifesto, we proposed the Mayor the following changings:
- Two crosswalks should be provided at the crowded intersections of this road: Dorobanților Boulevard – Cloșca Street and Dorobanților Boulevard - Brateș Street;
- Speed limiters must be located into the dangerous curves, described previously, and into crowded intersections, mentioned above;
- Traffic indicators such as “Reduce the speed” should be assembled where most of the accidents happened: the intersections between Dorobanților Boulevard and Brateș, Cloșca, Diana and Albina Streets.
The Mayor committed to implement as soon as possible our initiatives.
Also, the Vice Mayor and head of the Local Police have assured us that they will closely follow the implementation of our proposals, specially the two crosswalks and speed limiters.
