DDAD Academy at professional schools
DDAD Academy constitutes an innovative prevention strategy device which is based on individual experience (alcohol driving simulation) and reasonable arguments instead of deterrence:
The main tool of DDAD Academy is the innovative Virtual Reality Drink Driving Simulator, the first of its kind in Europe:
Developed in 2018 this computer-controlled simulator shows imposingly how alcohol affects the ability to drive, because virtual reality can achieve a high level of authenticity and a much deeper immersion for the participant.
So what did we do? First, we enhanced our existing drink driving software to Virtual Reality. Then, we put a small amount of sensors inside a real car, preparing it for its use in professional schools.
Finally we organize annual events of the “DDAD Academy” at state level in up to ten professional schools. There we target especially students of automobile and mechatronical engineering.
Now the student, sitting inside the prepared car, wears the Oculus Virtual Reality headset and operates accelerator pedal, brakes and even the steering, because the car is positioned on rotary plates. Inside the headset the Virtual Reality technology generates a highly realistic 360° field of view and allows the “driver” to see (and drive) in all directions. The VR software simulates drink driving on different routes (e.g. through the city, along the highway, across the alps) and different weather conditions without putting the student at risk. With the DDAD Academy Simulator students experience the effects of blood alcohol concentrations of 0,8 ‰ or 1,1 ‰ with the most significant restraints such as:
retarded reactions
tunnel vision
misjudgement of speed
uncoordinated steering movements.
Our VR drink-driving simulator conveys a uniquely vivid but safe impression as well as an emotional imposing experience which leaves a lasting mark and achieves a high teaching and learning effect. Because of the stability of our software we can use the VR Simulator the whole day without any downtime. This is, of course, very cost and time effective and a great basis for reaching as many students as possible. The remaining students can observe the ongoing simulation via a big screen, where we stream the VR-Data in real time.
Alongside the VR Simulator trained peers talk to students at eye level without wagging fingers about both health issues and legal (and actuarial) consequences. Among other actions (e.g. obstacle courses while wearing “drunkbuster goggles”) these talks are the second essential aspect of DDAD Academy. Picking up their recent experiences in the Simulator we encourage young people to think about their own limitations as road users and the specific risks they face. Thus with all our actions we focus on providing new positive acting alternatives.
We work closely together with teachers to accomplish maximum synergy and long lasting effects for the students. In doing so DDAD Academy is a fully adequate tool to expand the school’s own road safety curriculum. DDAD Academy is well organized and thus easily repeatable at every other school. It is also comparatively easy to transfer the concept of DDAD Academy to other countries..
