What problem did you address/are you addressing?
We want to change young people's attitude towards alcohol, drugs and other intoxicated substances, especially with those who drive. Project is focused on young drivers and drivers-to-be. We want to encourage them to be responsible, to think ahead, to plan a safe way home from a party, to follow a non-drinking rule while driving and to raise their awareness of possible consequences when acting irresponsible behind the wheel and within the traffic in general.
What are your objectives?
To encourage young people to plan a safe way home from a party, contributing to a Vision 0 – zero road crash fatalities and severely injured on our roads.
To reduce the number of predominantly young drivers who drink and drive.
To reach as many days without road traffic crashes as possible.
Describe the characteristics of your target audience
Our target audience are young people aged 12 to 25. They are very activetly involved in traffic, starting to drive and have very few experiences. In social aspect their peers are very important and socially they don't want to be any different. That means high risk in drinking and driving. According to the participation in traffic, young drivers are among the most common causes of road traffic crashes. Even more, together with other passengers in a vehicle young drives are among the most common road traffic victims as well. Young drivers in the age group of 18 to 20 years cause two to four times more road traffic crashes under the influence of alcohol more then drivers above 40 years of age.

Training the volunteers
We organized training for the volunteers in order to prepare them for the activities, to teach them how to use breathalyzers, how to approach young drivers etc. We also introduced the project, activities of other participating organizations, why alcohol is one of the biggest problems in Slovenia regarding road safety and gave them all the information they needed for answering questions on gas stations and in the night clubs during the activities.

Activities in petrol stations
Our volunteers approach drivers – especially young drivers – and introduce the project and drunk driving issues. We encourage them to drive sober and responsible all days and nights of the year and to fill out a questionnaire about alcohol related topics. Drivers are given a small reward for cooperation – an informational brochure and a disposable breathalyzer or other gifts from our sponsors.

Activities in nightclubs
In the clubs volunteers stood by the door where they could explain to the visitors about the event and activities before entering to the dance hall. In each club we put up project posters – at the door, around the promotional stand and by the bar.
Volunteers were very active and during the night encouraged drivers to participate and become a designated driver. Volunteers gave young drivers (those who wanted to participate) bracelets to remind them to come back to the stall just before they go home from the party, so they can do the breathalyzer tests.

In schools moderators talk to youth about the meaning of the safety systems in traffic and possible consequences if not using them or not using them correctly. Moderators demonstrate reaction time and through social games and role play discuss about the relationship and danger of alcohol. Youngsters also try to walk with “drunk glasses”. In the process we encourage them to build the positive relationship towards road safety. In the second part of the workshop participants talk to road accident victim. They also watch some videos about accidents and talk about them with the specialist.
