The Road Safety Class

Road Safety Class is a project which was developed between 2015 and 2019 throughout Bucharest, the Capital of Romania, reaching not less than 65.000 kids. The project is informing 3rd and 4rd graders about the traffic rules and the importance of respecting them. Nowadays, Road Safety Class became the most complex and extensive road safety project that has ever been implemented in Romania. At the moment of speaking, we are requested by parents, high school executives and authorities to develop this project further, introducing it into high schools of Bucharest, for the future drivers.

The Safety Road Class, held every school day in Bucharest, have turned out to be a complex project and beyond that, in the autumn of 2019 we will run it as a pilot throughout big cities of Romania.

Of course, such a complex project can only be implemented with the help of an appropriate team. Our team has exceptional psychologists, who trained the Psychology and Pedagogy students to teach Road Safety, developing thus a methodology namely designed for this project. Policemen, known as “the superheroes”, attend each of our classes, students gain experience in human interaction, photographers spot every moment suitable for framing and open-minded teachers are willing to provide the little pedestrians with the everyday safety they need.

After each class we are urging the pupils, under the careful guidance of their teachers, to create a layout that has to include all the acquired knowledge.

What is more, we took The Safety Road Class further and organized some events, safety road based, in commercial spaces characterized by intense traffic of people. Thereby, in the 2017-2018 school year, we developed 5 workshops from which 3 concerned safety road and the other 2 were first aid lessons.

In June of 2018, we organized an complex event of defensive driving in the parking lot of Bucharest Mall where we had safety road workshops, bike trails with obstacles, rally car and professional drivers together with the representatives of Romanian Police, promotions and lots of prizes for our supporters.

We do not limit ourselves to educating children, so we went for the teachers too. In the 2017-2018 school year we developed 5 training courses for primary and preschool teachers at 2 highschool in Bucharest, where more than 500 teachers got instructed by psychologists and police officers.

We are not confined to offline activities, but proactively involved in social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, where we came up with an awareness-raising campaign on the importance of the Road Safety Education.

Welches Problem wollen Sie angehen?
Unfortunately, Romania is one of the worst performers in improving road safety from EU. Even from his accession to UE Member States, Romania keeps leading in the top 3 countries with the most road accident fatalities in UE. •For example, Romania and Bulgaria were the EU Member States with the highest road fatality rates in 2018, according to preliminary figures published by the European Commission (EC). In fact, Romania and Bulgaria were the only two EU states with a fatality rate higher than 80 deaths per million inhabitants. For the majority of Member States, the road fatality rate was below 60 deaths per million inhabitants in 2018. •There were around 96 deaths per million inhabitants in Romania last year, and 88/million in Bulgaria. The rate reported for Romania was 4% lower in 2018 vs. 2017 and 21% lower when compared to 2010, the same data show. Still, Romania ranks first, far away from the European Union average of 49 deaths per million inhabitants and much further from the EU countries with the lowest rates such as Denmark (30/million), Ireland (31/million), and Sweden (32/million). •In this regard, we started The Road Safety Class project, where we aim to educate children on how to act as responsable traffic participants, because we belive that for the long term, the education may be the key of all problems. •Moreover, we are aware that the infrastructure is maybe the biggest problem in this equation, but our statistics show that the poor road safety education in Romania, which results from the high number of accidents caused by pedestrians and by the high number of children involved in accidents, are at least as important as the infrastructure. • These being said, our project's mission is not only to fight against the lack of awareness by increasing the attention to this issue, but to change the attitude and most important... to educate!
Was planen Sie zu tun? Beschreiben Sie Ihre Ziele:
Increase the road safety education level
Train 25,000 3rd & 4th graders yearly
Increase the involvement level of public authorities
Increase the awareness of children, parents and road users about the importance of traffic rules in the proximity of schools
Welche Zielgruppen haben Sie?
Describe the characteristics of your target audience
3rd and 4th graders in Bucharest, children aged 8-10 who learn how to be safe when they are outside and play. What is more, we hope to make them speak to their parents and to convince them to respect rules such as always putting on their seat belt or not crossing on the red color of the traffic lights.

The Road Safety Class Layout Contest - 3rd and 4th graders

The Road Safety Class is not supposed to be only theory presented to the pupils. The Road Safety Class dynamically combines theory and practice, interactive games and real-life situations. In this regard, at the end of Road Safety Class, each classroom is invited to make a layout in which to implement everything they have learned within the classes. The best school layout will be chosen by it's school teachers in the first stage. After that, EDIT Association organize a popularity contest on Facebook for every district of Bucharest followed later by a popularity contest between the top three of each district. The winners are invited to the Award Ceremony where they receive mountain camps tickets for a week and other special prizes.

Award Ceremony of The Road Safety Class - 3rd and 4th graders

Starting from the 2nd Edition of Road Safety Class, every project has ended with an Award Ceremony where all the institutional partners, sponsors and the winning classes of The Road Safety Class Layout Contest, together with the pupils and their teachers and parents, have been invited. At the Award Ceremony, we reward with countless awards and with one week mountain camps, the best layouts chosen from all over the Bucharest's schools. These being said, Award Ceremony is also an opportunity to celebrate the end of the actual edition of Road Safety Class and look forward for the next one!

Is there a plan for continuing these activities in the coming years?
The plan for the project is to be present annually in 140 schools of Bucharest and develop further in other cities of Romania, starting with this year (autumn of 2019).
Wie werden Sie Ihre Ergebnisse verbreiten?
We conduct studies and research which we make public to the authorities, public and media institutions. Moreover, we invest in comunication and promotion on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and we power up some public events and press conferences after the projects we have ended.
Wie gehen Sie vor, um den Erfolg Ihrer Maßnahme zu bewerten?
-The project is in its fifth year of progress. On its 3rd edition, in 2016, we started a study in which we observed the pupils' capacity to understand information offered during class. The study revealed that the manner in which we teach the road safety aspects to children is comprehensible and easy to learn. However, this quantitative study couldn't provide us information regarding the manner in which the pupils begin to implement the aspects discussed with the lecturers. On the 5th edition, in 2019, we've launched a vast research endeavor in which we studied the children's living environment regarding road safety. We've conducted a survey on 1000 pupils from which we've learned about the inappropiate conduct they've been exposed to. For the upcoming edition, we will integrate the information we've gathered so far in order to involve the childrens' parents, who are the first and most intimate vectors of teaching responsibility in traffic. In addition, we will involve the childrens' teachers in order to provide us with feedback.
