Road Unsafety Can Knock You Down

It has been observed that more often than not, teenagers act and react under peer pressure. Playing video games with friends is a favorite activity of teenage boys. However, only few of them can really accept losing in such a game. Their reactions can be unpredictable and may have devastating results that move far from the gaming joystick to real life. That is why we wanted to send the message that impulsive, illogical reactions can have disastrous effects on our lives.

Having the above in mind and also being moved by the fact that a 17-year-old student of ours lost his life riding his motorbike, we created a 45-second TV spot depicting two teenage boys playing a racing video game. Unluckily, one of them loses and challenges the other to transfer the race on the road. Needless to say, that they drive illegally as they are only teens. Being inxperienced but greatly self-confident they go on with a real car race. The spot has an open ending for teenagers to be puzzled as to what really happens.

Our school was awarded 3rd prize in the 2nd National Competition entitled “Road Safety – Common Responsibility” - on 23rd May 2019 - organised by the Educational TV of the Greek Ministry of Education and “Panos Mylonas Institute”. During the award ceremony we were given material by the “Panos Mylonas Institute” which we handed in to our students who participated in order for them to be able to inform the rest of our school community about what they learned.

What problem did you address/are you addressing?
We addressed the problem of illegal driving, speed and that of the clear cut between video games and real life. During school year 2018-2019 we carried out an extra-curricular educational program in which 35 16-year-old teenage students participated. After being given some hints on road safety through discussion, videos and photos, students were asked to answer an online questionnaire so that the responsible for the program teachers could detect students’ prior knowledge on the topic. They had to answer questions like: Do you know what the term “Road Safety” means? Name some organisations or people that deal with road safety and road accident prevention. Who would you like to interview in order to get information on road safety and road accidents? What would you like to ask a driver / rider concerning his behaviour when s/he drives / rides? What would you like to ask a teenage boy / girl who rides a motor bike / bike? What activities / actions should we develop during our program in order to sensitize our fellow citizens? Following, the students worked in groups and carried out different activities like drawing, intervewing people, writing the plot of the TV spot we produced and finally creating the TV spot itself. They also attended an information session during which the commander of the Motorway Police on Corfu island presented them with a lot of interesting information and answered their questions.
