Calatayud is a city with a population of 23,000; this figure does not count those people who are not officially registered and work in major centres, including the Logistics Academy of the Territorial Army, which comprises approximately 3,000 people, in addition to immigrants, many of whom live in Calatayud. The Calatayud Local Police Force, which has 36 employees, is responsible for road safety.

 

1)       Road safety courses will be taught for nursery and primary schoolchildren on the new children’s road safety circuit, which was inaugurated in January 2010 and comprises a classroom with capacity for 25 pupils, a practice track with karts, bicycles and tricycles and a storeroom for material. In the near future, we will broaden the scope of our road safety activity, including secondary school pupils and groups of senior citizens, as a number of accidents occurring in our city involve these groups.

 

2)       In order to raise citizen awareness about road safety, we will conduct prevention campaigns in the local media, focusing on the causes of accidents and dangerous situations relating to mobility. Campaigns targeting drivers will be conducted in order to raise awareness and promote respect of traffic lights, and surveillance campaigns will be conducted to correct the behaviour of those people who go through red lights.

 

3)       In 2010, a campaign will be conducted targeting senior citizens, who are frequently the victims of accidents.

 

4)       Moped driving courses will be held for secondary school pupils, focusing on safe and sensible driving that complies with the Highway Code.

 

The actions will affect the 23,000 inhabitants of Calatayud and schoolchildren from four regions.
