Axel Druart (Responsible Young Drivers) recently spoke with us about the European Road Safety Charter’s new mission to engage with vulnerable road users, particularly youth.

“At 16-years-old, you start to be able to drive a motorbike, so you need to know you have to wear a helmet, you need to know the consequences if you’re over speeding. It’s some kind of ignorance because they have never had the experience of a crash.

"As well, alcohol and drugs are very deep issues right now.”

The ERSCharter plans to hold workshops in each of the 28 EU member states for the period 2013-2016. Druart, a road safety expert and avid campaigner, highlights the main aim for these events:

“Our goal is to engage young people and young stakeholders, working in road safety altogether, to connect them, to create synergies, and to create concrete outcomes after the workshops. Mainly we want to exchange ideas, opinions.

"These are the topics that we will bring to the workshops during the European Road Safety Charter.”

Axel Druart was speaking with us as part of the ERSCharter experts’ meeting, held in Barcelona at the end of 2013.

A world authority in road safety, Dr. Venter described how important the Charter is and how it is making a real contribution on Europe’s highways.

He stressed that it is key to engage all EU citizens and encourage both private and public sectors to tackle the issue. Any such collaboration would be of great value to the ERSCharter’s road safety targets.

Dr. Venter added that this joint effort would be crucial to “… make a difference to world road safety conditions and contribute to the United Nation’s Decade of Action for Road Safety”.

You can a full video of this interview with Dr. Venter below.

Dr. Pieter Venter is the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Road Safety Partnership and works as a regional manager for Africa. He was previously a manager of traffic safety for The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

The EU is introducing a harmonised licence model and minimum requirements for obtaining a licence. This should help to keep unsafe drivers off Europe's roads - wherever they take their driving test.

Transport represents a crucial sector of the economy. This publication provides an overview of the most recent and most pertinent annual transport related statistics in Europe.

It covers the European Union and its 28 Member States and, as far as possible, the current EU candidate countries and the EFTA countries. The content of this pocketbook is based on a range of sources including Eurostat, international organisations, national statistics and, where no data was available, on our own estimates. Our estimates have mainly been produced to get an idea of the EU total.

Hungarian Scientific Association for Transport (KTE) made a survey at a popular Hungarian summer festival, which highlighted the risk of using a mobile phone while driving. Nowadays not only the voice calls, but the written messages are growing risk factors too. 1/5 of the respondents usually send SMS, e-mails and other kind of messages while driving. The low-budget risk prevention video clip was made in 2004 by KTE and it turned out a success.

A recent assessment of the burden of disease from noise by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that traffic noise is a major cause of environmental health problems. In cities, and near main roads and railways, traffic is the major contributor to noise levels. At present, some 210 million Europeans are regularly exposed to road traffic noise levels exceeding 55 decibels and 35 million are exposed to these levels of rail noise, pursuant to recent studies. Health impacts frequently occur above this level, according to the WHO and the EU.
