education in school or in community organizations

During the school year we organize many meetings to make our students realize what kind of dangers they can meet on their way to school and back home. We believe that thanks to such meetings our students will be more safe and their knowledge of how to call for help and first aid abilities will not have to be checked in real situations. This school year there were several meetings with police officers. On 29th September two female police officers visited our school.

During the school year 2015/2016 the students of Primary School No 15 in Radom take part in a program called S&V (Safe and Vulnerable) , which is organized by the local police station. The program’s motto is “zero vision”, which is for zero victims in traffic accidents. It started on 17th December 2014 and the students from our school took part in an opening ceremony. They showed an artistic presentation about pedestrians’ safety on the streets. The we wearing reflective vests. They were also holding red and green lights symbolizing traffic lights.

Traffic Academy is a periodical for of traffic education that is carried on in Primary School No 15 in Radom since 2008. There are many streets with heavy traffic near our school. One of them is an international route E7. All this makes the teachers worry about the safety of the students. The statistics show that in Poland 15 people are killed and 160 wounded in traffic accidents. Is it many? It is definitely too many! Many of those accidents could be avoided if both drivers and the pedestrians would be more cautious and know traffic regulations better.

Our school is active in doing activities about safety on the roads. It is very important for us to teach very young children how to behave and be safe on the road. It is because Radom is a quite big city with heavy traffic and our school is near busy roads with traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. The teachers in our school want our students to be safe on the roads. That’s why they want them to gain necessary knowledge about traffic rules. Therefore they organize many school competitions and school meetings about safety on the roads.

In the school year 2015/2016 our school once again took part in the educational program for first graders from primary schools called “Puchatek Safety Club”. The first year at school is a new stage in the life of both a child and his parents. For many of parents it is the first time they leave their child in teachers’ care. This is why we want our school to be unforgettable experience for children.

“Road Crashes – Let’s Talk” Campaign The Association “Road and Safety” invites primary schools to participate in a nationwide preventive and educational action called “Road Crashes – Let’s Talk”. Our school has joined this initiative for the fifth time. The topic of this year’s edition was “Visibility on the Road”. The action was under the patronage of the Minister of Education. Tasks planned and carried out as part of the action “Road Crashes – Let’s Talk” 1. Talking to the pupils about the necessity of being visible on the road during form tutor periods. 2.

Apart from activities connected with traffic that are conducted during lessons, pupils from grades 4-6 can learn in the Green Classroom. Fourth-grade pupils participated in such a lesson and the topic was “Road Users”. The lesson in the Green Classroom gave us the possibility to monitor traffic, indicate road users’ proper and improper behavior and divide road users into pedestrians, passengers, drivers and cyclists. We could check if their behavior was in conformity with the Highway Code. It was great.

On 16th September fourth-grade pupils visited the Fire Brigade Headquarters in Dąbrowa Tarnowska. Pupils marched the streets of the town under the watchful eyes of police officers who were there to guarantee children’s safety. Having reached the destination, pupils were shown the equipment of a fire engine. Everybody could try a fireman’s helmet on or sit behind the wheel of a vehicle. Those who were brave enough could try their hand at an obstacle course or hold a fire hose and pour water trying to hit the target.

Our school is successfully winning over partners to propagate road safety. We established cooperation with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways – the Department in Kraków. They sent us a parcel with booklets for our pupils and one of them was “The Colored Highway Code”. It was published to increase the level of children’s safety on the road, during play or on trips. The book acquaints pupils with the world of traffic regulations in a very simple way. It contains all the road signs concerning pedestrians and cyclists.

The Ninth Festivities called “Kid, Be Safe On The Road” In October the Driver Training Centre in Tarnów invited first-graders to take part in the Festivities called “Kid, Be Safe On The Road”. This event has been organized for five years now. As always there were lots of competitions and surprises prepared for children, for example a fitness test or a road signs knowledge test. Children could take part in a kart race or a race holding a stop sign and wearing a police hat.

For several years our school is active in the national program “Traffic accidents – let’s talk”, which is organized by the Association “Road and Safety”. The fifth edition of this program was very successful for us, because we took the second place in the category “school”. This was the result of many activities made in our school such as Safety on the Roads Meeting, poetry competition, school presentations and many others. The students from our school take part in the program every year in December. Due to it there are many meetings in school and lessons about safety on the roads.

In June 2015 our school took part in a competition called “We rescue and we teach how to rescue”. The group of students chosen we fast to be in a semi-finals and then the finals of the competition. It was not so easy though, because we had to win with many other schools form the whole country. The school newspaper gave us the place in the semi-finals and the film in which both students and parents acted let us be one of eight the best schools in Poland. On 10th June 2015 the students from our school took part in the finals.

For the last few years there is an educational program in our school carried on. This was thanks to Jurek Owsiak’s Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy (an organization to help the others in need). The program is entitled “We rescue and we teach how to rescue”. We realise that everybody can be a witness of a traffic accident and therefore should know how to behave in such situation. Thanks to this knowledge many human lives can be saved. In our school students are taught first aid abilities all year round. Since 2014 these activities we due to “Safe Road” project.

The European Day of Emergency Number 112 is in the school calendar every year. There was a school event on 11th February 2015. The people invited to our school said that the real problem are the people who call 112 just for fun and they really don’t need help. The meeting was organized together with a police station from Radom and was hosted by a police officer – Kamila Adamska. During the first part of the event, the students found about how to be safe on the road. They also watched a film about emergency number 112 a how to behave on the place of accident.

For the second time our school organized an evening party, “The Fluorescent Soiree”, for grandmothers and grandfathers called “Granny, Grandpa, Be Visible On The Road”. A lot of invited guests gathered in a beautifully decorated gym to see the first-graders’ performance – the representatives of local authorities and institutions, police officers from the District Police Headquarters in Dąbrowa Tarnowska, students of the University of the Third Age and retired teachers. Pupils’ grandmothers and grandfathers were special guests of honour.

On 9 June 2015 The Eleventh District Road Safety Knowledge Tournament For Grades 1-3 “Impeccably And Safely” took place in our school. The main idea of the tournament was to acquaint the youngest road users with road safety rules and giving first aid. The tournament not only broadens their knowledge about safety but also gives a chance to get pupils into the habit of appropriate behavior on the road. Moreover, the tournament popularizes riding bikes as a great means of transport and an excellent recreational activity as well. The tournament is very famous among pupils and their parents.

Many schools experience chaotic traffic scenes at the beginning and end of the school day. As a school, we alongside The City of Edinburgh Council, took decision to limit traffic in the street directly outside the school at key times, meaning that parents would not be able to park right at the gates to drop off. Our aim is always to create a safer, more pleasant environment.
