What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety? 
  • Contribute to the development of communal mobility plans (CMPs) in the Walloon region. The CMP is a local policy guideline document regarding travel, parking and accessibility. It also constitutes the area of agreement between the various local mobility actors, both in terms of the creation of plans and their implementation and assessment.

The reduction in the number and severity of road accidents is a central objective of the CMP. 86 of the 262 Walloon districts are currently involved in the creation of a CMP. 42 districts have already adopted one. A new decree has given CMPs a legal basis. From now until 2008, the objective is the adoption of a CMP in over half of all Walloon districts, particularly those that have a greater number of inhabitants, as well as the three principals of the seven Urban Mobility Plans (that is, on the level of a group of districts forming an urban region) provided for by the CMP decree.

CMPs aim to contribute to reducing the number and severity of road accidents, as well as the feeling of road insecurity. Through developments made in this field, one may reasonably consider that CMPs will participate to an extent of 10% in the objective of reducing by 50% the number of people killed on the roads between now and 2010.

  • Contribute to the development of School Travel Plans (STPs) in Walloon districts. Surveys carried out by the Mobility Observatory in Wallonia clearly indicate that school areas generate huge traffic problems, leading to a feeling of insecurity.

To restore confidence in parents as to the safety of the route to school, a new decree regarding school transport sets forth the methodology for the creation of an STP, as well as for its transversal implementation by all those involved within and outside the school (public transport companies, districts, regional committees, etc.). A total of 45 schools in nine Walloon districts implemented such a plan during the 2003-2004 school year.

STPs allow for two types of action: either actual facilities (such as bike racks, speed control mechanisms, safe pedestrian paths, etc.) or accompanying measures (such as organising the collection of children and taking them to school on foot or by bicycle). From now to 2008, the objective is the implementation of an additional 30 STPs per year.
