What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

Through the European Road Safety Charter programme, we want to improve road safety by adopting the following measures during the next three years:

  1. We will define the city’s accident black spots. In order to reduce the number of road accidents in residential areas, we will make new plans to solve all problems during the next three years. In addition, we will reconstruct 25% of road junctions, make new road markings and build new pedestrian crossings by 2010.
  2. In order to increase safety, we want to construct new roads that include cycle lanes, since the existing bike network is limited and our target is to expand it as much as possible. Therefore, we will construct 4 km of pedestrian walkways and cycle lanes by the end of 2012.
  3. In order to reduce the number of accidents involving pedestrians, we will reconstruct 80% of the pavements in the city centre and adapt all pavements for all citizens, including disabled people, by constructing special ramps and striped flagstones. We will also restrict motor traffic. This action will commence on 1 January 2008 and will last until the end of December 2010.
  4. In order to increase the safety of busy roads, we plan to redesign the road concept, including on-street parking places, side pedestrian walkways, central reservation areas, isolated green lanes and new modern road lighting. We will reconstruct the squares and pedestrian walkways of the city centre over the next five years, and we will redesign Phaneromeni Avenue, Griva Digeni Avenue and Gregory Afxentiou Avenue.
