Road traffic accidents have become one of the major problems in Cyprus. The number of road traffic fatalities average to 108 per year in our Country.Last year's statistics recorded 2,398 road accidents resulting in 102 road fatalities and 741 serious injuries.
Taking into consideration the above statistics , it is not suprising that Cyprus was ranked among the top three countries in Europe.
In a recent study developed by SATRE ( Social Attitudes to Road Safety Risk in Europe ) the average Greek Cypriot driver is sketched out as a driver of high risk. The study highlights the fact that there is a lack of appropriate road behavior and mentality. It is not surprising that the most frequent cause of road accidents in Cyprus is the human factor.
Official statistics indicate that the main causes of road traffic accidents in the the Republic of Cyprus are speeding ( 72 % ) and restless driving ( 28 % ).
The current situation, which results in increased social problems, economic and other costs, require immediate inteventions and actions.
We did not know anything about the issues. Unfortunately we expirience a tragic death, 1st of January 2007. The Foundation created by the Parents & their friends, by high school students - friends of George -with the help of the Police of Cyprus and the Ministry of Communucation & Works. Also the Road Safety Institution Panos Mylonas in Greece help us a lot.
When three seventeen years old high school students wrote a song for the tragic death of their friend-George-, and as a family published it, not only in a CD but also we created and a Video Clip, then all started... and many people encourage the Family to establish the Foundation for Road Safety.
Cyta, Laiki Insurance, Module close 2 programme, The Road Safety Initiative Group, Olympiakos Nicosia Football Club and many others cooperate to create awareness.
The Foundation will give emphasize to drunk drivers, since George was hit and left in the pavement of the road while talking with his friends at 03.21 a.m. 01/01/2007, by a young drunk driver.
