Road Safety Education
Last year, Spain was visited for more than 80 million people.
In one way or the other, all of them are considered road users of our roads, when they carry out the following actions; riding a bike, driving a car, as passengers in a vehicle, or just walking down the street. Therefore, road safety concerns all of us
As a Spanish traffic police officer, I see every day many accidents and traffic offenses committed by the lack of knowledge of the law. Most of them could have been avoided if the driver would have known the Spanish current traffic regulations.
Nowadays, the Spanish traffic law is not translated into English, and there is no reliable web where a non-Spanish speaking people can solve their doubts about the traffic law.
In Europe, each member country has its own traffic regulations; sometimes similar and other, but many other times too different between countries, causing sometimes risky situations on the road.
In order to reduce the number of accidents on the Spanish roads, during the last 12 months I have been translating the Spanish Traffic Law into the English language.
A few weeks ago, I have edited and published a free ebook of the Spanish Traffic Law. Therefore, from now on, everyone can have the law on their devices and read it to solve all their doubts.
Furthermore, I have created a web, where the law can be read it online. This allows users the possibility of having the law updated.
If after reading the law, they have any doubt, I have created a page on facebook called "Driving in Spain -N332" (the name of the road I patrol every day), where I answer in English, all the questions of the European drivers about the Spanish Traffic Law. Nowadays there are nearly 130.000 people following the page.
And finally, each month I visit schools, associations and organizations for expats living in Spain, to give them a presentation about traffic law and road safety tips. Solving all their doubts after each act.
I DO believe that laws must be accessible and understandable to all citizens. Consequently, if we have millions of tourists visiting our country and thousands of European citizens living in our country permanently, we should give them facilities to understand our legislation.
Knowing the law is the best way of having safer roads and a necessary measure to prevent accidents.
